Capturing the Layers and Depths of Sky and Sea

Oil Painting Workshop at Delgatie Castle

Discover the art of painting atmospheric skies and luminous seascapes in this hands-on workshop. You will explore the subtle interplay of light, colour, and composition that brings both sky and sea to life on canvas.

The workshop is designed for participants with some prior painting experience who wish to deepen their understanding of landscape techniques. The day is thoughtfully structured to guide you through each stage of the creative process:

  • Morning Session: The Sky
Begin your painting with the sky, learning how to establish mood and atmosphere through careful colour selection and blending. You will discover how the sky sets the tone for the entire piece and serves as a foundation for the seascape to follow.

  • Afternoon Session: The Sea and Foreshore
Building on the morning’s work, you will explore the layers and depths of the sea, using the light and colour established in the sky to inform your approach. Techniques in both acrylic and oil will be demonstrated, allowing you to experience the unique qualities of each medium and how they can be combined for dynamic results.

Throughout the day, you will receive expert guidance on underpainting, the use of complementary colours, and effective composition. The workshop includes live demonstrations and individual support, ensuring you leave with a finished artwork you are proud to display.

All materials, including canvases, paints, and brushes, are provided. Simply arrive ready to enjoy a creative and enriching experience.

Small group size (maximum 6 participants) for individual attention

Refreshments—morning coffee, lunch, and afternoon tea—will be served by the castle’s dedicated team.

Please note: This course is suitable for those with some painting experience. A detailed email with further information will be sent one week prior to the workshop.
