Apprentice to the Masters

Sunday 26th May 2024

In the early days of painting I was actively encouraged to find artists whose work inspired me.

I took time to really look at their work with the aim of working out how they achieved these fantastic results.

I became a long distance apprentice to the masters.

In doing so I learned much. With trial and error I worked out how marks were made, how interesting textures were created, the importance of complimentary colours, the light, the dark the list goes on. I studied the work of Joan Eardley, Kurt Jackson, Victoria Crowe, James Morrison, Anne Blockley to name a few. Each of these artists created something in their work that I loved and wanted to know how to do and my sketchbook was the place to play. Of course I could never replicate their work and that was not the intention. The intention was and is to work out how they made the marks. I soon learned that not everything is about the paintbrush.

What I learned experimenting was and is fundamental to how I paint today.

This workshop is a chance for you to take time to experiment , really look at the paintings that inspire you , try to answer the question - how did they make the marks they make?

I will demonstrate how I went about finding the answers , so much fun, think clingfilm , rollers , spatulas , toothbrushes and then how I incorporated what I’d learned into my own work. I’ll bring resource materials for you to work from but please bring along work from Artists that you admire. It a chance for us all to be introduced to new artists and discover how they paint. Inspiration for us all !
